Chinese BBQ Pork – Char Siu

  • 2 pounds pork shoulder
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut the pork shoulder into long strips and place in a bag.
  2. Mix soy sauce, honey, hoisin sauce, rice wine, sugar, five-spice powder, and food coloring in a bowl.
  3. Pour the marinade over the pork, seal the bag, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Remove the pork from the marinade and place on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes, basting with the marinade every 10 minutes.
  7. Broil for an additional 5 minutes for a caramelized finish.
  8. Let rest before slicing.
